Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager freelancer: a clean tagging plan, documented and tested

Google Tag Manager centralizes all your tags (GA4, Google Ads, Meta, consent) in one container. Built well, it makes you independent and reliable. Built badly, it doubles your conversions. I do the first one.

What a good GTM container changes for you

Without GTM, every tool drops its script into the theme, a plugin or a forgotten snippet. Nobody knows what’s running anymore. With a structured GTM container, every tag has a name, a trigger and a reason to exist; versions are archived; you can add a tool without touching the site’s code.

What the setup includes

  • Tagging plan: the list of events to measure, written with you in business language (quote request, call, add to cart, purchase)
  • GTM container installed in your CMS: WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Wix
  • Structured data layer, pushed by the site on every meaningful action
  • GA4 tags (configuration and events), Google Ads (conversions, remarketing, Enhanced Conversions), Meta (Pixel + Conversions API)
  • Precise triggers: validated submission, real click, visibility, no approximate page-view
  • Variables: value, currency, IDs, hashed customer data
  • Consent Mode v2 connected to your consent banner
  • Readable naming and folders, version notes, container exported as a backup
  • QA: every event tested in preview and in production, with screenshots

Tags, triggers, variables: the method

Triggers that match real actions

The “form submitted” conversion must fire when the form is actually submitted and validated, not when the button is clicked, nor when someone lands on a page that can be refreshed. Depending on your CMS and form tool, I use the native event, a listener or a dedicated data layer push.

A data layer rather than page scraping

Reading the price from the page HTML works until the next theme change. A data layer pushed by the site (or the CMS) is stable: that’s what I install, with the e-commerce events Google recommends.

A container you can understand

Explicit naming, folders per tool, a note on every tag. If someone else takes over the container tomorrow, they’ll find their way. You also receive an export of the container and the up-to-date tagging plan.

Server-side GTM: when is it worth it?

Server-side tagging (sGTM) extends cookie lifetime, resists ad blockers better and gives you control over the data sent to platforms. It has hosting and maintenance costs. I recommend it for e-commerce stores with meaningful volume or strong compliance constraints. For a lead-gen site, a well-built web container is enough in the vast majority of cases.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions

I already have a GTM container. Do we start over?

Rarely. I start with a container audit: duplicate tags, triggers that are too broad, broken variables. Often a repair (from €350) is enough. If the container is unreadable, I rebuild it cleanly while keeping the history.

Does GTM slow my site down?

A clean container, with tags loaded at the right time, has a negligible impact. Orphan tags and stacked scripts are what slow things down. I clean those up along the way.

Can you install GTM on Shopify or Wix?

Yes. Shopify through the theme and checkout custom pixels, Wix through the native integration. Each CMS has its quirks, I know them all.

Will I be independent after the setup?

Yes, that’s the point. You get the tagging plan and a readable container. Adding a tool or a simple event becomes possible without a developer.
