ChatGPT Ads campaigns + tracking, from $690/month

ChatGPT Ads is now self-serve, with no minimum spend. I open your account, install the oaiq pixel and the Conversions API deduplicated, then run your campaigns on verified conversions instead of the platform’s raw numbers. Tracking specialist since 2012, working remotely with US businesses.

Where your ad shows up in ChatGPT

The ad is a card displayed below the answer, separated from it. One format only, with no size or placement to choose.

Recreation of a sponsored card below a ChatGPT answer, based on OpenAI’s documentation. The ad shown is an example.
  1. Who actually sees these adsOnly people on the Free and Go plans. Not Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, not accounts identified as under 18, and not in the ChatGPT Atlas browser.
  2. The user’s questionIntent written out as a full sentence, usually far more specific than a three-word query typed into a search engine.
  3. The answerIt is not influenced by ads: OpenAI runs the ads system separately from the chat model. An advertiser cannot shape, rank or alter a response.
  4. The “Sponsored” labelThe card sits below the answer, visually separated. One format only: no size and no placement to choose, unlike Google or Meta.
  5. The ad contentImage, headline, description and link. The context hints you write are what describe the conversations and buying situations it should appear in.
  6. The click, and the measurement behind itThe oppref parameter arrives with the click on your site. It is what ties the sale back to the right campaign: lose it in a redirect or a cache, and the conversion is attributed to nothing.

Where ChatGPT Ads actually stands

Page current as of September 11, 2026. OpenAI’s ad platform is moving fast: everything below is verified as of that date, and I keep this page updated.

  • Self-serve, no minimum. The entry commitment ($200,000 at launch, then $50,000) is gone. You open an account in Ads Manager, add a billing method and run.
  • One format. A sponsored card below the response, visually separated from it: headline, description, image, link. No ad unit size to pick, no placement to choose.
  • Three objectives. Reach (billed on CPM), Clicks (CPC) and Conversions (oCPC: billed per click, but bidding toward a tracked conversion event).
  • Targeting by conversation. Country is set at campaign level, and in the United States you can go down to state, DMA and ZIP. Delivery can be limited to the iOS app, the Android app or the web, and context hints at ad-group level describe the conversations, topics and buying situations where your ad belongs.
  • A specific audience. Ads only show on the Free and Go plans — never on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu, never to accounts identified as under 18, and not in the ChatGPT Atlas browser.
  • No influence on answers. OpenAI states that ads run on systems separate from the chat model: advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter a response.

In short: a young channel with inventory limited to part of the user base, but where purchase intent is spelled out in full sentences rather than three keywords. It deserves a dedicated test budget, and it should be judged on measured conversions only.

The oaiq pixel and the Conversions API: where this is won or lost

Opening a ChatGPT Ads account takes ten minutes. What decides the outcome is the data you send back to OpenAI. With no conversions reported, the Conversions objective has nothing to optimize toward and you are paying for clicks without knowing what they return. This is exactly the work I have been doing on Google and Meta since 2012.

The browser pixel

The oaiq SDK loads in the <head> and initializes with the pixel ID you create in the conversions tab of Ads Manager. Conversions are then sent with the measure command:

oaiq("init", { pixelId: "YOUR-PIXEL-ID" });

oaiq("measure", "order_created", {
  type: "contents",
  amount: 2599,
  currency: "USD"
}, { event_id: "order_12345" });

The standard events cover most funnels: page_viewed, contents_viewed, items_added, checkout_started, order_created, lead_created, registration_completed, appointment_scheduled, subscription_created and trial_started. App events app_installed and app_opened are not supported by the pixel and must go through the Conversions API.

The click is tied back to the campaign through the oppref parameter, captured automatically from the landing URL. Your redirects, your cache and your consent banner must not strip it along the way — that is a classic reason conversions end up attributed to nothing. Automatic advanced matching hashes customer information with SHA-256 in the browser before it is sent: raw data never leaves the page.

The Conversions API, server side

The pixel alone no longer sees everything: ad blockers and browsers such as Safari that limit tracking. The Conversions API does not override a refused consent: it recovers what the browser loses, for visitors who opted in. The Conversions API sends the same events from your server, POSTing to https://bzr.openai.com/v1/events with the pixel ID as a parameter and Bearer authentication. Up to 1,000 events per batch, each with its id, type, timestamp_ms and data object, plus action_source for web events. Timestamps must fall within the last 7 days and no more than 10 minutes in the future.

Deduplication: the number one trap

Send the same sale through both the pixel and the API without linking them, and OpenAI counts it twice: your cost per acquisition looks half of what it is, and the algorithm optimizes toward an illusion. The rule is simple — the API id must carry exactly the same value as the pixel event_id. Deduplication keys on pixel ID, event name and that id; the first event received wins and later duplicates are dropped. Same trap as on Meta, and the first thing I check on an existing account.

Customer identifiers

To match more conversions when the click identifier is missing, the API accepts hashed customer data: emails_sha256, phone_numbers_sha256, external_ids_sha256, first_names_sha256, last_names_sha256, plus the obref reference read from the cookie dropped on landing. Normalize, then SHA-256 — the same hygiene as Google Ads enhanced conversions, and something your privacy documentation needs to reflect.

What a ChatGPT Ads engagement covers

  • Opening and configuring the Ads Manager account: business entity, tax ID or EIN, billing method, compliant landing page
  • Picking the objective that fits the goal: reach, clicks, or conversions on oCPC
  • Writing the ads: headline, description, image and link, in several variants, tested
  • Writing the context hints: describing the conversations and buying situations where your offer is relevant
  • Country targeting, platform restrictions and custom audience matching
  • Installing the oaiq pixel and the Conversions API, deduplicated, in GTM and your back office
  • Wiring consent: banner, Consent Mode v2, tags gated on opt-in where it applies
  • Budget, bids and gradual scaling that does not reset learning
  • QA with screenshots: I show you the event firing, not just an “it’s installed”
  • Monthly reporting reconciled with your real leads or real sales

ChatGPT Ads or Google Ads? Both, but not with the same budget

Google captures demand that is already formulated, in keywords, at enormous volume and with twenty years of history behind it. ChatGPT captures intent expressed as a conversation, usually earlier in the decision and far more detailed: “what should I use for…”, “compare X and Y for a company that…”. The inventory, on the other hand, is limited to part of the user base, and volumes are nowhere near comparable yet.

Advertisers getting started report opening bids in the $3 to $5 per click range, with CPMs roughly between $25 and $60. Those are market observations, not official OpenAI rate cards, and they move quickly — I never build a media plan on them, I verify them on your own account.

My recommendation does not change: you do not move a budget that is working. Take a dedicated test budget, make sure conversions are reported correctly first, and judge the channel only on leads or sales measured on your side. If it does not work, you know within a few weeks and you stop, without having spent your Google budget on it.

FAQ

Your questions

Is ChatGPT Ads open to any advertiser?

Yes. OpenAI opened self-serve buying through Ads Manager, and the minimum commitment that applied at launch ($200,000, later $50,000) has been removed. You create an account at ads.openai.com, add business details, a tax ID or EIN, a billing method and a landing page, and you can run. Agency partners such as Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP are still an option for large budgets.

Can I measure conversions the way I do on Google Ads or Meta?

Yes, and that is the whole point. OpenAI ships a browser pixel (oaiq) and a server-to-server Conversions API, with deduplication between the two. It is the same architecture as Meta’s Pixel plus Conversions API: the browser reports what it still can, the server sends the rest, and a shared event id keeps the same sale from being counted twice.

Can my ads influence what ChatGPT answers?

No. OpenAI states that the ads system runs separately from the chat model: an advertiser cannot shape, rank or alter a response. Ads appear below the answer, in a card clearly labeled as sponsored.

Who actually sees these ads?

People on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads, neither do accounts identified as belonging to people under 18, and there are no ads in the ChatGPT Atlas browser. Worth factoring in if your buyers are mostly on paid plans.

Do I need a consent banner for the ChatGPT Ads pixel?

It is an advertising tracker like any other, so it belongs in your consent banner and privacy policy wherever consent rules apply — the EU and UK, and the US state privacy laws that require an opt-out of targeted advertising. I wire it in GTM alongside your other tags and gate it on consent.
